Information collected

The site does not require an account and does not ask you for personal information. Information is collected in these ways:

• Analytics. The site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use it, such as which pages are viewed, how long visits last, the type of device and browser, and approximate location derived from your IP address. For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, analytics cookies are not used.
• Comments and reactions. If you comment on a post, the name, emoji, and comment you submit are published publicly on that post, along with any image you upload or GIF you choose. Emoji reactions are counted anonymously. GIF searches are sent to GIPHY through this site's server, and GIFs in comments load from GIPHY's servers. To prevent spam, a one-way hashed version of your IP address is stored briefly for rate limiting; the IP address itself is not stored. To have a comment removed, email the address below.
• Translation. The Translate menu uses Google's website translator. Nothing is sent to Google unless you pick a language; when you do, Google's translator loads and the text of each page you read is sent to Google to be translated, under Google's own privacy policy. A cookie remembers your language until you switch back to English.
• Messages you send. If you email or call, your message and contact details are used only to respond to you.

Advertising

The site does not show ads and does not use advertising cookies.

Embedded content

Some articles include YouTube videos. These use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode and do not load until you click play. Once you play a video, YouTube (Google) may collect information under Google's Privacy Policy. Photographs credited to Wikimedia Commons are hosted on this site and do not send information to Wikimedia.

Browser storage

The site stores one small setting in your browser's local storage: your light or dark theme preference. It stays on your device and is not sent to the site.

Your choices

• Opt out of Google Analytics on all sites with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
• Block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Some features may not work as intended.

Data sharing

Information is not sold. Analytics data is processed by Google as described above. Information may be disclosed if required by law.

Children's privacy

The site is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.
